News article - 7 Dec 2015</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
This year, along with his traditional Christmas cards, Director GCHQ Robert Hannigan is including a brain-teasing puzzle that seems certain to exercise the grey matter of participants over the holiday season.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
The card, which features the 'Adoration of the Shepherds' by a pupil of Rembrandt, includes traditional Christmas greetings from Director on behalf of the department. However, unlike previous years, the 2015 card will contain a grid-shading puzzle and instructions on how it should be completed. By solving this first puzzle players will create an image that leads to a series of increasingly complex challenges.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Once all stages have been unlocked and completed successfully, players are invited to submit their answer via a given GCHQ email address by 31 January 2016. The winner will then be drawn from all the successful entries and notified soon after. Players are invited to make a donation to the <a href="https://www.nspcc.org.uk/" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #428bca; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children</a>, if they have enjoyed the puzzle.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
People who enjoy puzzles, but who are not yet on Director's Christmas card list, need not worry. The first puzzle can be seen below.</div>
<h3 class="gx-rteElement-H3" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 24px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.1; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 20px;">
Getting started</h3>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
In this type of grid-shading puzzle, each square is either black or white. Some of the black squares have already been filled in for you.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px;">
Each row or column is labelled with a string of numbers. The numbers indicate the length of all consecutive runs of black squares, and are displayed in the order that the runs appear in that line. For example, a label "2 1 6" indicates sets of two, one and six black squares, each of which will have at least one white square separating them.</div>

There are 10 people lined up from tallest to shortest each wearing a different hat color (black or white).<br />
<br />
The entire group doesn’t know how many black or white hats there are and you can only see the people in front of you but you have to guess what color your hat is.<br />
<br />
In fact, the entire group needs to guess 9 of the 10 hat colors correctly, starting from the tallest one.<br />

<br />
Alice and Bob are playing a game. They are teammates, so they will win or lose together. Before the game starts, they can talk to each other and agree on a strategy.<br />
<br />
When the game starts, Alice and Bob go into separate soundproof rooms – they cannot communicate with each other in any way. They each flip a coin and note whether it came up Heads or Tails. (No funny business allowed – it has to be an honest coin flip and they have to tell the truth later about how it came out.) Now Alice writes down a guess as to the result of Bob’s coin flip; and Bob likewise writes down a guess as to Alice’s flip.<br />
<br />
If either or both of the written-down guesses turns out to be correct, then Alice and Bob both win as a team. But if both written-down guesses are wrong, then they both lose.<br />
<br />
The puzzle is this: <i>Can you think of a strategy Alice and Bob can use that is guaranteed to win every time?</i><br />

<br /> Think of a <b>10-character string</b> with the numbers 0 through 9 and each number appearing exactly once, such that each number (except for the first of the left number) is within 1 of SOME number to its left (e.g. we would say that 6 is within 1 of 5 and 7. Note that 0 is NOT within 1 of 9, i.e. we don't wrap around from 9 to 0).<br /><br /> For example, 3452671089 is correct, because for any number in it (except for the 3 all the way on the left), you can find a number to its left that is with 1 of it. For example, if you look at the number "7", then you can find the number "6" to its left, which is within 1 of it.<br /><br />
<a name='more'></a>Another valid string is 0123456789, which again follows this rule.<br /><br />An invalid string is 1023457689, because if you look at the number "7", there is no number to its left that is within 1 of it (which would be 6 or 8).<br /><br />How many 10-character strings are there that meet the described criteria?<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is 100 prisoners in a prison, each in separate cells, which are sealed off, soundproof and windowless. There is also a lobby in the prison with a lightbulb in it. Each day, the warden will pick one of the prisoners at random (even if they have been picked before) and take them out to the lobby. The prisoner will have the choice to flip the lightbulb switch if they want. The lightbulb starts in the "off" position.</div>
<div class="riddle_section" style="margin: 10px 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When a prisoner is brought out to the lobby, he also has the option of saying "Every other prisoner has been brought out to the lobby." If a prisoner chooses to say this and it is true, all the prisoners will go free. However, if a prisoner chooses to say this and it's wrong, all the prisoners will be executed. So a prisoner should only say this if he knows it is true for sure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Before the first day of this process begins, all the prisoners are allowed to get together to discuss a strategy to eventually save themselves. What strategy could they use to ensure their eventual salvation?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Magician calls in three wise men and tells them to all close their eyes. While their eyes are closed, he goes around and puts a hat on each of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"I put a blue or white hat on each of you," he says. "I won't tell you what color each hat is, but you must know that i had 3 blue hats and 2 white hats."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Now open your eyes," he continues. "You may not communicate with each other at all. Within one hour, one of you must call out the color of your own hat."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The wise men open their eyes and look at the other mens' hats. They stand there for almost the whole hour in silence, thinking. Just as time is about to run out, all three men figure out the color of their own hats and yell the colors out at the same time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can assume that all three men are perfect logicians, that they know that the others are perfect logicians, and that they all think at the same speed.</div>
